Just Kids is a nostalgic duet that reflects on simpler times and features the incredible talents of Kiruna-Lind Devar.
Just Kids is 1 of 24 songs that were written during 2019 for the Look Up Sessions where Steve showcased 8 songs a month during February, March & April to a live audience in his living room. The audience members were given some wine and a meal and in return asked to write down their opinions on Steve’s songs. Steve then subsequently chose the top 12 songs from the Look Up Sessions to feature on his album. Just Kids was an audience favourite but Steve decided that it still had a way to go before he took it into studio.
The original premise of Just Kids is the sad reality that faces social dynamics in society today. People, at times, seem more occupied with their cellphones than they are with other human beings. This thought process, in conjunction with reflecting on simpler times, is what lead Steve to start writing Just Kids. While the comments about Just Kids from the Look Up Sessions were all relatively positive, the 2 that really stuck out to Steve were “the 2nd verse lacks depth” and “I can hear this as a duet”. That was when he decided to ask Kiruna if she wanted to help him complete the song.
Kiruna brought a brand new energy and innocence to the song that Steve hadn’t yet considered. Steve wrote Just Kids from the perspective of someone who is bitter about the fact that humans have lost touch with each other. Kiruna, however, came at it from the angle of someone who positively reflects on their nostalgic thoughts. The result is a perfectly balanced duet of innocent nostalgia of childhood and sentimental concern for modern-day society.
lyrics
Colour fades from your stare
As the life that lies behind your eyes
Is stolen by a blinding light
That will never care if you’re there
Well I care
Ooo
I don’t wanna feel alone
Ooo
So I’ll dream about a home where we are
Just kids staring up at the stars
Innocent without a light to blind our hearts
Be in this world with me, is that too much to ask?
Is it me living in the past
Or did we forget who we are?
Photographs stained with time
And laughter remembered in the freedom of togetherness
I take comfort in what’s known
In our love that swings in roundabouts
Childlike
Ooo
I don’t wanna feel alone
Ooo
So I’ll dream about a home where we are
Just kids staring up at the stars
Innocent without a light to blind our hearts
Be in this world with me, is that too much to ask?
Is it me just living in the past
Or did we forget who we are?
Come home
And we’ll be
Two kids getting lost in our hearts
With a kiss you’ll take me right back to the start
Just kids staring up at the stars
Innocent without a light to blind our hearts
I’m here, you’re with me and that is all I ask
Can we keep living in the past?
Let’s dream to be more than we are
